Who's behind this project?
I am Óscar, creator of Sumar Palabras and Spanish teacher since 2009.
I am a man, white, straight, middle-class, born in Spain. That is, I have everything not to have major problems or worries in life.
However, I also have a conscience, I can't close my eyes when I see the injustices of such an unequal society. Sumar Palabras is the result of these concerns.
I think that helping to expand the vocabulary on these topics will help generate more intellectually interesting conversations and more understanding of what's happening in the world.
And I believe that most Spanish students who are interested in these topics have few places where they can learn to talk about feminism, racism, equity, activism, and other similar issues.
So, here's that place. Can I count on you?
Why does Sumar Palabras exist?
When we are learning Spanish or any other language, we try to listen to and read words about what interests us most.
In this context, there are people who care about what happens in the world. About the rights of all people. About situations of injustice.
Sumar Palabras is for that type of learner. For those who think that words are a powerful tool to know, understand, and transform a world that doesn't work fairly for most of its inhabitants.
Digital Magazine
Sumar Palabras is, above all, a quarterly digital magazine.
Each edition of this publication includes articles for B2/C1 level students, all related to social justice and encouraging you to add new words to your vocabulary.
